Create Your Own Paper Woven Hearts

Danish woven hearts have a long history dating back to the 1800's. The oldest know sample is one made by Hans Christian Andersen in 1860, it is currently located in the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense, Denmark.

Braided hearts are traditionally used as Christmas tree ornaments with small treats filled inside. However, they have become symbols of affection and are given as Valentine cards. Their checkerboard pattern makes them vibrant as garland and hanging decorations.

Variations in Design

Braided hearts can come in different sizes, colors, and designs. With practice, you can create your own fancy hearts by increasing the number of strips or changing the size of the strips. Cut shapes into the strips and they can overlap to generate hearts, stars, and dizzying patterns. For beginners, the 3x3 pleated heart is easiest and most enjoyable to make.
